Tilde's Summer Scrap Challenge

Here is a little quilt I made as part of a summer scrap challenge in 2008. I first made all the little 4 patches using red and neutral 1.5inch square swatches, the kind you used to get from online fabric stores.
It took me a while after making the 4 patches to decide on a setting and they lay around for a long time as a UFO. However, I finally completed it in the summer of 2011.

This is little quilt is my own design and finishes at approximately 26 inches square. If you'd like to make one then here are the basic instructions:
You will need 16 Double 4 Patch blocks. Block size 4.5 inch unfinished.
1. For each block: cut 8 squares 1.5 inches and 2 squares 2.5 inches. Sew together the smaller squares to make 2 x 4 patch blocks then sew together with the 2.5 inch squares to make the Double 4 Patch block.
2. For alternating plain setting blocks cut 9 x 4 ½ inch squares..
3. Cut 2 x 4.5 inch squares and cut each on the diagonal once. These will be your four corner triangles.
4. Cut 3 x 7.5 inch squares and cut each across the diagonal twice. This will give you 12 side setting triangles. These are slightly larger than normal to leave space to add a little flange.
5. Sew up the blocks and setting triangles in a diagonal sequence, then join the rows. Trim center leaving a ½ seam allowance beyond your blocks all around.
6. For the flange, cut strips 1 inch wide and fold in half and press. Line up the raw edges with the raw edge of the center. Tack/baste in place.
7. Cut border fabric 4 inches wide if you plan to scallop it. If you plan to scallop you border, mark the cutting line of the scallop on the border but wait until you have done the quilting before cutting it. .
8. For the appliqued hearts I used one precut heart (from a bought pack) and made another 4 from it. You can make a template for yours as follows:
Cut a square of freezer paper 3 inch square. Fold in half. Starting at the fold, draw one half of a heart.

Cut out on your drawn line.
Use to cut 5 hearts and applique to the plain blocks using your favourite method. If doing needle turn remember to add a seam allowance.

Layer and quilt as you wish. I did very basic machine stitch in the ditch to secure and also in the border following the scallop edge. Then I hand quilted some little hearts in the plain squares.
Have fun. If you decide to make one from these instructions I would love to see it. :)
